I am currently relying on temp employment. I don’t want to commit myself to a traditional job with a traditional employer, but I need something that resembles a full-time income. Temp employment is an effective option, particularly if you can get a long-term gig.
I manage to land a long-term gig as a maintenance worker for a pair of connected apartment complexes that are located downtown. The apartment complexes are skyscrapers, and they have simple T-shaped layouts.
I’m acting as more of a maintenance assistant for the two primary maintenance workers. The work has focused on some fairly straightforward work tasks: taking out garbage from public spaces, sweeping, mopping, swapping out dumpsters for the trash chutes, clearing out rooms with no tenants, painting rooms, tossing furniture out of windows into extra large dumpsters, etc.
The view of the downtown area is quite nice from the upper floors. There are some nearby former employers, and a building that once had a clinic that a few former employers used as their employee clinics. My previous connection to this area gives me a funny feeling. It’s a bit positive, but it’s also unpleasant.
I like how I can rely on my car for personal storage. I’m not stuck in a fixed location for hours. I can freely go to my car, and I can even drive my car from one apartment complex to the next, though both complexes are rather close to each other.
I also like how I can access abandoned locations that have a long history, in the complexes. They’re currently used for random, somewhat chaotic storage. We can still take breaks in these areas.
This all feeds into some of my personal fixations. I fixate on limited enclosed spaces and isolated spaces. The complexes are loaded with these types of spaces. Spaces on the first floor that can only be accessed from doors on the outside, maintenance spaces that are kept locked, and upper floors.
Upper floors interest me because of their isolation from the ground level. Most of the human world is on the ground level, though the exact elevation of the ground level varies from place to place. Upper floors are separate and isolated from this, and they can only be reached through a handful of methods.
On the whole, I don’t mind the maintenance gig. I can rely on this before my GI Bill and VA benefits kick in. I just need to bide my time.
